Skalice - Chateau

Chateau Skalice is located in the southern part of Bohumilice and was built in 1549 by Jan Malovec on the site of an older fortified manor. The Malovec family owned the chateau until 1863 and during their ownership in the early 19th century the chateau underwent a reconstruction, during which it acquired a late Baroque appearance. Then Count František Thun-Hohenstein bought the Skalice estate and chateau and since 1878 it was owned by the aristocratic family Lumbe of Malonice. In 1890 they added the northern Classical wing.

In 1923 the Skalice chateau was bought by Ferdinand Holoubek, owner of the Saponia company in Prague. In 1950, however, the family of Ferdinand Holoubek lost the chateau, forests and land. After the nationalization the estate was managed by the Vimperk State Farm and the chateau was divided into flats. In 1996 the dilapidated chateau returned to the ownership of the Holoubek family and is now owned by the granddaughter of Ferdinand Holoubek, Zdenka Hiršlová Voženílková. Under her leadership the whole complex is undergoing a demanding and sensitive reconstruction, which is gradually returning not only the castle, but also the farm buildings and the park to their original beauty.

Today, the entire chateau complex, together with the large park, is used as a riding school which offers riding lessons all year round. It is also possible to visit, by agreement, some of the chateau premises.
