Chyše - Chateau

Mikuláš had the Gothic castle rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau in 1578, but a year later he sold both the chateau and the town Chyše. In 1607 the estate was owned by Bohuchval Berka of Dubá, who, as one of the masterminds of the uprising of the Bohemian estates in 1618–1620, fled the country after the defeat of the Battle of the White Mountain and his property was subsequently confiscated. In 1622 Chyše was sold to the Imperial Appeal Councillor Jiří Vilém Michna of Vacínov. Chyše remained in the possession of the Michna of Vacínov family until 1664, when Vilém Albrecht I Kolowrat-Krakowský bought the chateau at auction for his daughter Anna Ludmila. She and her second husband Karel Jiří Michna of Vacínov undertook a lavish Baroque reconstruction of the chateau in the years 1695–1708.

The indebted estate was acquired in 1766 by Count Prokop I Lažanský of Buková. In 1823 Prokop III Lažanský inherited the estate and had the chateau remodelled into its current Romantic form in the years 1856–1858. The last owner of the estate from the Lažanský family was Count JUDr. Vladimír Lažanský, who owned it from 1925 until 1945, when it was confiscated. In the following period the chateau housed several state institutions, which did not take care of it. Eventually it found use as a camp for school children. In 1976 the chateau was completely emptied and closed, and then followed the period of its greatest devastation.

At the beginning of 1996 the dilapidated chateau was bought by Marcela and Vladimír Lažanští and in the same year they started its complete renewal. On May 30th 1999 the first chateau exposition was opened, which was enlarged in 2009 by the premises of the owners‘ residence on the 1st floor of the chateau. The valuable nine-hectare chateau park was also fundamentally revitalized, including its water system. The chateau is open for visitors from April to October.
